Partial Knowledge in Multiple-Choice Testing
نویسنده
چکیده مقاله:
The intent of this study was to discover the nature of (partial) knowledge as estimated by the multiple-choice (MC) test method. An MC test of vocabulary, including 20 items, was given to 10 participants. Each examinee was required to think aloud while focusing on each item before and while making a response. After each test taker was done with each item, s/he was required to provide answers to retrospective questions. The specific purpose of the questions was to elicit the examinees’ ‘systemic knowledge’ of each item (i.e., how much they knew about each component of the item as well astheir knowledge as to the relationship between the components). Based on the nature of the test takers’ protocols, task analysis, and objective of the study, a coding scheme was developed for analyzing the protocols. Then, the protocols were closely examined to find out the coding categories that contributed to the basic identity of the two polar classes of knowledge (i.e., Absence of Knowledge and Full Knowledge). The same approach was used in the rest of the protocols to find out the possible subcategories of partial knowledge. Similar codes were categorized into natural classes to develop a model of knowledge in MC testing which resulted in a model of knowledge comprising five categories.

Guessing, Partial Knowledge, and Misconceptions in Multiple-Choice Tests
The number right (NR) method, in which students pick one option as the answer, is the conventional method for scoring multiple-choice tests that is heavily criticized for encouraging students to guess and failing to credit partial knowledge. In addition, computer technology is increasingly used in classroom assessment. This paper investigates the effect of computer-adaptive assessment software ...
متن کاملMeasures of Partial Knowledge and Unexpected Responses in Multiple-Choice Tests
This study investigates differences in the partial scoring performance of examinees in elimination testing and conventional dichotomous scoring of multiple-choice tests implemented on a computer-based system. Elimination testing that uses the same set of multiple-choice items rewards examinees with partial knowledge over those who are simply guessing. This study provides a computer-based test a...

15 صفحه اولTesting Programming Skills with Multiple Choice Questions
Multiple choice questions are a convenient and popular means of testing beginning students in programming courses. However, they are qualitatively different from exam questions. This paper reports on a study into which types of multiple choice programming questions discriminate well on a final exam, and how well they predict exam scores.
متن کاملThe memorial consequences of multiple-choice testing.
The present article addresses whether multiple-choice tests may change knowledge even as they attempt to measure it. Overall, taking a multiple-choice test boosts performance on later tests, as compared with non-tested control conditions. This benefit is not limited to simple definitional questions, but holds true for SAT II questions and for items designed to tap concepts at a higher level in ...
متن کاملMultiple Hypotheses Testing with Partial Prior Information
By modifying the optimal criterion of Kudo (1967), an alternative theory is developed for incorporating prior probabilities into multiple hypotheses testing. Unlike Kudo’s theory, an explicit optimal test can be obtained. It is shown that the optimal test is a natural extension of some well-known tests such as the maximum likelihood test.
